We’ve almost survived our first week in Prague!
Woo!
While it hasn’t been easy (um, Mr. Jet lag wants to be my best friend), it also really hasn’t been all that hard. I feel almost guilty for saying this (and maybe you other travelers and expats out there can relate to this) but I actually feel most myself and most alive when I’m traveling. I really can’t pinpoint why, as I am currently thousands of miles away from most of the people who I love and most of the things I find most familiar. Although I’m a fairly seasoned traveler, I always plan to have days and months of time where I feel uncomfortable and struggle with the transition. However, I always adapt much more quickly than I think I will! Of course, it’s only been a week, and since I plan on staying Prague indefinitely, I’m sure there will be a whole load of transitions and adaptations in store. Still, I already feel very comfortable in this city.
Prague also makes it easy. It’s such a great city and I’m already half in love with it. I’m struggling to articulate why I love it so much, though. Sure, the buildings are almost too picturesque to be real, but then again, they’re old and sometimes dirty. The river is wide and grand and sparkly, surrounded by trees and putting off a cool breeze, but you can occasionally catch a whiff of sewer. There’s a bright energy to the city, but you can still feel the weight of communism.
Prague isn’t perfect but maybe that’s why it’s so wonderful.
I’ve decided to start a weekly (ish) series to share my favorite parts of each week here in Prague. I’ll try to spare you a gigantic post full of pictures, but this city is amazing so…no promises!
Our morning commute.
Not so long ago I had a horrendous, nearly hour-long commute through Denver traffic. Now, we walk across a bridge over a gorgeous river and get a glimpse of the Prague Castle and the many spires of the city.
The 100-year-old Czech deli we found.
The Jan Paukert Deli was established in 1916! Mostly though, the food. When you walk in, one side of the room is lined with a huge case full of open-faced sandwiches and salads. The other side? Lined with a giant case full of pastries and desserts. We will be back to taste one of everything!
Getting lost in the winding alleyways of the city.
It feels like there’s a surprise around every corner. I love the tiny alleys lined with old buildings and cobblestoned streets! It makes getting lost pretty enjoyable.
Our first view of Prague at sunset…and at night.
Having a beer in Old Town Square.
Old Town Square is really busy and expensive–but gorgeous. While we didn’t want to pay that much for a meal, we each had a beer and soaked it all in.
Come back next week for more glimpses of Prague!
Linking up with Casey and Lauren!
