Don’t get me wrong–this is the life I’ve chosen and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I think I’ve probably made that clear by now! However, there are things I do miss from home, not including my family, friends, or dogs, because those obviously rank higher.
Here are a few besides mac’n’cheese because I think I’ve talked enough about that on this blog…
…Cadbury eggs. Both mini and regular.
…my bed. The bed we have (which was free, so I can’t complain that much) just is not that comfortable. The mattress is to short for the frame, so if you flail about in the night like I do, you will end up kicking wood all night long. Not a euphemism.
…variety. I think the US is just the land of variety, in everything, from coffee to shampoo to vegetables to pasta to types of food to fast food chains. In a way, I also don’t miss this, because I have a difficult enough time making choices as it is!
…my collections. This makes me sound like a hoarder (which, if I had the money and space, I probably would be) but I love to have back-ups. I hate to run out of things and not be able to replace them. I prefer to have extra soap, tea, makeup, milk, frozen pizza, deodorant, batteries, you name it and I want a backup. We simply don’t have the space or the extra moola for that here in Budapest, so usually I end up freaking out when I still have half a bar of soap left just so I don’t ever have to be without my soap.
…an ice machine.
…my blankets. I have a strangely large pile of blankets sitting in my parents’ basement. Blankets are the best, they just make everything cozier. I think people must sense how much I love blankets, because I always get them for gifts even though I don’t think I talk about them that much.
…my decorations. I’m one of those let’s-celebrate-and-decorate every season type of people, especially when it comes to autumn and Christmas.
…my American phone number. Primarily so I can easily text and call people back home. This also is tied into being hours ahead of everyone, of course! Thank the heavens for FaceTime/Skype.
…my kitchen supplies.
…my closet. Shopping was (operative word was) one of my guilty pleasures, especially before I started grad school and actually had a (meager) income. E and I both were making money and I could easily purchase those cute socks I wanted, that cozy scarf, another sweater. I sound like a whiny brat because I knew I could get that scarf and still be able to buy food. We are certainly not destitute here, but every penny goes to our bills or travel, and we so far haven’t had any to spare. It’s been a great exercise in being frugal because I’ve always been terrible with impulse buys. That being said…I really miss my giant sock collection.
…Which brings me to my next item…Target! Since I can’t spend time walking the aisles of Target, I’m teaming up with Helene in Between and several other bloggers to provide one lucky winner with a $100 gift card so you can! What would you spend it on? Since Target now carries Burt’s Bees products…I would likely spend mine all on that. Enter below!
