When E and I left Prague this summer, we decided to try being digital nomads. Since we left Prague, we’ve traveled to Croatia, Montenegro, London, various parts of the USA, Costa Rica, Panama, had our honeymoon, got married, and attempted to be successful online.
While E almost immediately started enjoying his work online and doing well (these engineers, man!) a broken computer, wedding planning, and a lack of focus were holding me back. Really, they’re all excuses, because almost the minute I stopped teaching last June, I began to miss it. Not only did I miss teaching, but I missed staying for a long period of time in one location. I missed connecting with the culture and people of one place, and didn’t find fulfillment in our (too fast!) traveling. Now, don’t get me wrong, every place we went was amazing, but I felt burnt out of being “on the road” very quickly. In addition, the constant stress of finances on the road was wearing us both quickly.
We decided that we both wanted to stay longer in one country and get to know it, just like we had with the Czech Republic. However, two unmissable weddings this spring/summer had us thinking we would have to wait until the fall of 2016 before moving to a new place.
While searching for teaching jobs starting next fall, I came across a job that was hiring now, would let me bring E as my dependent so he could keep working online, and would let me take time off in May for my sister’s wedding. I had to apply, of course. And that leads me to the BIG NEWS I said I would be sharing with you weeks ago…
It took a little longer than I thought to finalize everything…but I can FINALLY share that…
WE ARE MOVING TO BUDAPEST! In January!
I’ll be teaching there from January to June, and likely longer if all goes well. It’s a more full-time position than my job(s) in Prague, which is exactly what I hoped I could find.
(This also means I won’t be doing any more On the Road posts, but I will be starting a By the Numbers series for our time in Budapest).
I’m so excited to teach again, to be back in Europe, and to experience more of the lovely Budapest. I hope you’ll follow along on this new journey! Thank you for all of you that have supported us along the way.
Also…come visit!!!

That is sooooo exciting!!! Can’t wait to read more about it. I’ve never even thought of teaching in Budapest. I’m so curious!!
AmyMacWorld says
Thanks!!! We are so happy to be here :). I’m not sure I would have thought of teaching here either if I hadn’t met someone doing it already :). It seems like a great opportunity–although I haven’t officially started working yet, lol. How is teaching for you?!? Are you staying in Korea longer?
Yalanda_Meshell says
One more year in Korea, we start jobs at a new school in March and that contract is for one calendar year. Then we’re heading home and are looking forward to some serious traveling in the US. We’ve realized while hopping around SE Asia we have not given our own country nearly enough travel attention!
AmyMacWorld says
Cool! Congrats on staying for another year :). We are seriously thinking there next–we just love Europe so much. If/when we do go back, it’s so nice that the US is so huge and has so much to see! I’ve never even been to NYC, ha! I’m sure you guys will have plenty of travels/adventures wherever you go next 🙂

I’ve been following you since Prague. My daughter was teaching English over there at the same time as you but never wrote or blogged about it as you, so I basically got what she was doing and experiencing through your words and pictures. She visited almost all of the same places (weekend and side trips) as you so -Thank You so very much!!! So now that she is back in the States, she misses the travel and the different cultures and now just signed on for a year teaching in Vietnam. I look forward to keeping up with your adventures in Budapest (I was secretly hoping you were going to say you were going to Vietnam). Congratulations and thanks again for your posts and insights!
AmyMacWorld says
Hi Myra! Thanks so much for your message. I love that you were able to see a bit about your daughter’s life through my blog. Sorry I’m not going to Vietnam though 🙂 but maybe she should start a blog, too! I know my parents and family enjoy catching up this way–I tell them quite a bit but usually different things make it into the blog. Thank you so much for following along, it means the world to me–and good luck to your daughter in Vietnam! I loved it there 🙂
Cynthia says
Congratulations on your big decision! Bet you two are so excited! And now you know exactly all the good things to bring with you. What kind of place will you be teaching at this time?
I always wonder how it would be to come back to the States after living in CZ but I’m not ready to find out yet 😛
AmyMacWorld says
Haha we were thinking that as we were packing–I know all the things I need to stock up on! Like Burt’s Bees ;). I’m teaching 1st grade at a bilingual school so, should be interesting. Haven’t started quite yet ;). But Budapest is lovely–maybe you two will make it over here someday soon! 🙂
Cynthia says
Yes – we’re headed there during Easter weekend! I know it’s a prime weekend for traveling (3 day weekend here! 4 if you teach kids!), but let me know if you guys will be in town then.
AmyMacWorld says
Oh awesome! I’m not sure what our plans our–six day break here so we will probably be on the road, but since we have to go back to the States in May AND July we might end up staying here/doing local trips :). So maybe we will finally be able to meet!!
Mere Salazar says
Oh congratulations!!! It’s exciting to finally have plans and feel more settled, yet able to explore the city you’re in! Looking forward to reading about life in Budapest!
AmyMacWorld says
Thanks, Mere! We are so happy! 🙂
