Christmas Abroad + BYOP!

Merry merry Christmas from Belgium!

I had some trepidation about Christmas abroad, away from my family and everything familiar.

While it was a strange Christmas, and certainly different, it ended up being a wonderful day.

We ate a delicious breakfast at our little hotel, wandered around the always charming Bruges (which was definitely not deserted on Christmas!), ate Belgium fries, had Belgium beer, exchanged a few small gifts, talked to our families, had Indian food that we’ve been craving for awhile, and watched a few of our favorite Christmas movies–namely Christmas Vacation, Love Actually and Die Hard (obviously). While I’m far away from almost everyone I love, Christmas was still full of what it should be full of–joy, laughter, family, love, gratitude, expressions of love from those near and far, Christmas lights, a festive atmosphere, a few little gifts, great food and fun.  What more could a girl ask for?

I’m grateful we decided to take a trip and try to make the most of Christmas in Europe. I’m especially grateful today, now that Christmas is over (tear) that we still have over a week of traveling, and week to look forward to in PARIS!

  2. Your mittens are so cute! I loved Belgium during the spring so I could only imagine how wonderful it is during Christmas. Happy Holidays!

  3. For the 2010-2011 school year, I did TAPIF (aka taught English in France). I couldn’t afford to fly home for Christmas, so a friend of mine and I met up in Bordeaux. It was about halfway between our two cities (she was teaching too), and neither of us had been there before. It was definitely a different kind of Christmas, but we enjoyed it.

    • That really does sound like a nice Christmas! I’ve been thinking about visiting Bordeaux but I’m not sure if it’s worth the visit. Did you like that area of France?? Happy Holidays (belatedly) 🙂

  7. Bruges is a great place to spend the holidays, although I must admit, I thought their Christmas market was a bit of a disappointment. I hope you enjoy Paris! Can’t wait to hear all about your trip when you’re back 🙂

    • I admit I was a little bummed out by their market, too. Just junky stuff for sale and not as great a vibe as I was hoping. But Bruges itself made up for that 🙂

    • Thanks, Mere 🙂 I was worried about being homesick but traveling and being busy is the way to go! And thanks haha…sometimes I get a little too carried away in my Christmas outfits 😉
