Thanks for the inspiration, Holly!
In a world full of bucket lists, I was tickled at the idea of doing an “Anti-Bucket” list, or things I won’t do before I die. It wasn’t as easy as I thought–most things I can at least justify trying once!
- Stop traveling. You may have gathered from this blog that I’m obsessed with travel. No? Well, travel is my jam. I feel so lucky to be living abroad and traveling so much right now, and I’m extremely fortunate to have been able to travel as much as I have (see my past travels here). I know the nature of my traveling may change over my life, but I always want to make it a priority. Even if I end up moving back to the States someday, I hope to travel near and far and everywhere!
- Stop writing. This one is easy, because no matter what has happened in my life, I’ve never stopped writing!
- Stop dreaming. This one may sound a little cheesy, but I hope I never lose my ability to dream of grand plans. It doesn’t always matter if the plans happen, because dreaming is the point.
- Settle down. Going along with “stop traveling,” I never intend to pick one spot and stay there forever. I may find a place I come back to, maybe even a home base, but I hope I never stop moving and shaking things up!
- Get a six-pack. As in, a six-pack in the abdominal area (I’m okay with many six-packs of beer). While I’m not against getting in shape, I know I will never be dedicated enough to get a six-pack. And I am okay with that!
- Buy designer clothing. I at least won’t make a habit of this. I just can’t justify it! Although I have learned the hard way that moving abroad with quite a few clothing items from Target was not the best idea–the few more expensive clothes I have are still going strong, and all of my Target leggings are full of holes. Here’s some free advice: invest in decent basics before moving overseas with one suitcase!
- Go bungee jumping. There are many extreme sports that I’d be interested in trying, but bungee jumping is not one of them. It looks so jarring, and unlike skydiving, I’m not sure you even get to get a good view of the gorge/canyon/whatever your jumping into upside down.
- Go cage diving with sharks. Again, there are many ways I’m dying to interact with nature (including more scuba diving). But cage diving? Feeling trapped behind bars while the boats tries to bait a gigantic predator? No, thanks.
- Travel to war zone for tourism. At least not intentionally (although I would consider volunteer work or a job in a war zone).
- Bring a video camera into the Louvre (or any major museum, or any museum for that matter). Or a selfie stick. Or a kid in a stroller.
- Be a morning person. Now this is one I kind of hope changes–but after almost three decades of life, I still am not a morning person. I just naturally stay up late! Too bad our society thinks everyone should be a morning person.
- Sew my own clothes. After many various sewing projects that have been utter failures, I have come to the conclusion that I will never be a stellar sewer (is that the right word?). I will settle for learning how to mend holes in my clothes, though.

Sarah @ DaydreamsofSummertime says
It is such a great idea to have an anti-bucket list I might have to do one myself. I agree with you on so many of these things especially the takign a video camera into the Lourve! x
AmyMacWorld says
Yes you should! It was fun to think of things I wouldn’t do 🙂 I was surprised at how many cameras were allowed in the Louvre, and in all the museums–I just assumed they would be banned!
Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki says
Your advice is so true, investing in quality clothes before moving abroad with limited items is so important. I made the mistake last year when I first moved to Iceland of buying a bunch of lower quality and cheaper sweaters that didn’t really hold up well through the winter. When I went home I was sure to buy a few quality items to help keep me warm.
AmyMacWorld says
Oh yes! Better quality clothes are so important for warmth as well as surviving their expat life, haha 🙂
Jamie | Gunters Abroad | Fit F says
Yes for six packs of beer haha!! Me too. And I bought some Hunter wellies before moving to England thinking it was ‘the cute’ thing to do, not realizing that they were probably the best and smartest purchase I made before moving here! Oh well, you live and learn….and get holes in your leggings 🙂 Again, so glad we got to hang out this weekend!! We really enjoyed it! I’m hoping to getting around to posting our stuff next week 🙂
AmyMacWorld says
That’s so funny, and lucky, that the cute thing is also a helpful thing haha, that’s not always the case 🙂
we had so much fun meeting you! we hope to meet up with you again someday !! I hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Prague!
Sara says
I’m so not a morning person either! I hate that societal pressure that makes you feel bad about it! It’s not my fault — my body just wants to stay up late!
Also, I’ve been bungee jumping and I have to say it was AMAZING. I’m not sure if I would ever do it again, because it was terrifying, but it was such a cool experience. And you get a good view of the canyon as you’re waiting to throw yourself off the bridge 😉
AmyMacWorld says
Hmm well at the moment I don’t think I would ever do any of these things, but I might have to re-think bungee jumping then! But yeah…being a morning person is out. It is annoying how people make you feel guilty about it…like it’s lazy or something. Yet, I am so productive in the evening! I need a job that does require early mornings haha 🙂
Christine @ A Keane Sense of A says
This is a great list! I’m totally with you on the bungee jumping! No thank you! lol and sky diving as well! I laughed at the selfie stick… cause I AM totally against it… unless I’m using one for my GoPro lol. #freepass
AmyMacWorld says
GoPros do not count haha! 🙂
Mishfish13 says
I hear you about the six pack. There’s just too many other things I want to do during the time it takes to get one! And then there’s the maintenance, etc. I’ve seen a lot of friends become obsessed and never stop being obsessed once they get theirs.
Who knows about the selfie stick, girl? Soon, everyone’ll be using it!
AmyMacWorld says
So true! Not only do I think I’ll never get one, I don’t think I would be able to maintain one. Mostly because there are so many other things I care about and want to do with my life!! I also think exercising that often is not actually that healthy for you…but I’m not a doctor haha ;).
I’m not necessarily against selfie sticks, just in museums I think they are the worst!!! Especially the Louvre, which is difficult enough to navigate without dodging those sticks every which way!
Mishfish13 says
Haha oh my gosh, I feel the same way about exercise!! It’s just way too much stress on the body… maybe long walks, yes, but not all that 😉 I haven’t really traveled yet at the peak of selfie stick season! We’ll see how that goes haha…
AmyMacWorld says
I love long walks! So much nicer on your body and easier to keep up your entire life, anyway 🙂
Abby Smith says
Awh I love the idea of this! I’m with you on so many too, especially the six pack haha. I can’t see that happening in the forseeable future, I like beer too much!

AmyMacWorld says
Oh I hear ya, girl! 🙂
Em says
Selfie sticks- aaaaargh! I really dig your bucket list 🙂
AmyMacWorld says
Thanks, Em! 🙂 those things really do drive me crazy, especially when you’re surrounded by them ha.
Diana says
The kid in a stroller in a museum is sometimes necessary, depending on the kids age and time of day. :/
AmyMacWorld says
I suppose I should keep that one in reserve for when I actually become a parent, huh? I guess it’s obvious that I don’t have kids yet 🙂
Diana says
Probably… I’ve taken a stroller to a sort of museum and it’s no joy ride for us parents either!
Angie says
I love this idea and am applauding you for #10.
In that line of thinking, I will never take a cruise to travel.
AmyMacWorld says
Ha I’m glad you agree! It’s a fun idea, you should write a post yourself 🙂 I’m not sure if I’ll ever do a cruise either…just doesn’t sound appealing! Except the relaxing and eating but there are other ways to do that on vacation 😉
Courtney @ Adelante says
Love this! I’m with you about the sharks, I’ll never be able to go cage diving either. Nor will I ever be able to hold a snake around my neck. Never gonna happen! Home Ec was one of the only classes I ever got a B in, so I feel ya on the sewing issue too.
AmyMacWorld says
The snake I *might* be able to do, because my brother had one as a pet when we were kids. I’m glad I’m not the only one who got a B in Home Ec–it seemed like everyone else at my school got an automatic A!!
Kerri says
I’ve been loving these “things I’ll never do” posts! They’re really interesting, I think more interesting that the things that everyone wants to do!
I’m with you on number 1 and 3 & 4!
I still wouldn’t rule out a bungee jump though!
AmyMacWorld says
I’ve just started seeing them pop up–I like them too, they’re kind of refreshing! It’s nice to think of things I DON’T want to do because I get a little bummed out always listing all the things I WANT to do but I can’t do them all!
Bungee jumping is more of a popular choice than I thought. I still don’t think I ever would, though!
Holly Hollyson says
With you on the not travelling to a war zone. The not having a 6 pack is something I struggle with because I used to in my youth and my brain hasn’t quite acknowledged I am 30 years old yet!
AmyMacWorld says
Oooh that would be hard! I’ve never had one so that’s not an issue for me ;). Thanks for the inspiration, I loved your list!
Sammy @ Days Like This says
This is so cool! I love anti bucket lists. Travel on mine for sure!
AmyMacWorld says
Yes to traveling foreverrrr! 🙂
Camila says
hahaha that’s a great one and I love everything on your list! Oh my gosh kids in strollers at the museums – I saw so many yesterday in Glasgow, so annoying! And I think I’d like cage diving with sharks…or at least I wouldn’t mind the sharks, would love to see some in reality, right there, while in security – just afraid of diving in general for some reason.
AmyMacWorld says
I definitely have a love/hate relationship with diving, too! When I’m down there and can relax, it’s amazing—but getting to the point where I can relax is difficult!!!
Natalie Joseph says
I’ve been cage diving with Sharks it wasn’t too bad! lol
AmyMacWorld says
Good to know! I don’t think I’ll be able to do it but E really wants to, so at least I can hope he’ll be safe haha.
Jessi @2feet1world says
Haha great list! I don’t know if I could do one of these as I would never say never… but cage diving, bungy jumping and sewing my own clothes all look pretty unlikely for me too 😀
AmyMacWorld says
For the most part, I live by that philosophy (and this list will probably change) but it was fun to think of things I probably won’t do…especially sewing my own clothes, haha.
