It’s time for another rendition of my favorite travel game, Imagine If I Lived Here! (Read parts one and two!).
“Imagine If I Lived Here” involves careful research and thorough data collection.
Ha, not really–but it does involve me putting myself in the shoes of a local, and wondering what their everyday life might be like. I try to pick a variety of locals, from the girl at the market to the fisherman on the bay, to try to give myself a glimpse into what it could be like.
In truth? I really have no idea what it would be like to live those lives, since that is not my reality. It’s theirs. I’m sure I also make it much more romantic than it actually is. Such is my nature. However, I think it’s the best way to travel–to imagine the different nuances and daily events that happen in these beautiful places we visit.
I’ve imagined what it would be like to own a vineyard in Napa, California, seeing those views everyday, tending my vines, and hosting wine tastings…
I’ve imagined myself living in Scotland, perhaps in the Highlands, with castles around every corner and a local pub where everyone knows my name…
I’ve wondered what it would be like to live in a tiny surfing town, like Huanchaco, Peru, where the locals are friendly, the food is delicious, people come from all over the world to ride the waves, and the sunsets are divine…
I’ve imagined (and am now experiencing!) what it would be like to live in Prague, to walk across a grand bridge and see a castle over the river, and to lose myself in the alleyways of the city.
Do you play a game like Imagine If I Lived Here when you travel?

I would love to own a winery in Napa Valley, how wonderful would that be!
AmyMacWorld says
Right?? It seems like such a great place to live 🙂
TiinaL says
I like that game of imagining an alternative life, too… especially when I’m stressed, and another place / job seems so much more relaxed…
AmyMacWorld says
Haha true 😉 I think I probably romanticize them even more when I’m grumpy with my own life!

I like this game too. So far I old live in Paris and Dumfries 🙂 aside from places I have already lived of course! I like to be practical when I imagine. Oh, I would also live in Ypres. And Provence.
AmyMacWorld says
Oooh Provence! And Paris, really? I have not heard great things about that city…but of course I still would love to visit, and probably live there 😉
Van @ Snow in Tromso says
Ohhh another episode of my favourite game! 😉 I would love to live in Scotland and kinda regret not doing my Masters there 😀 also you definitely deserved to be co-host and I can’t wait to follow your adventures in Europe!
AmyMacWorld says
Haha I’m glad you like this game! Me too, obviously ;). I am so excited to be co-host and I can’t wait to read about your life in Scandinavia! Also, I wish I could find a way to live in Scotland too…it’s not easy for US citizens sadly. But I will visit again soon, and hopefully you will too 🙂
Camila says
I love this game! 🙂 I never imagined myself living in Scotland and then I did haha it’s so much fun! And there are sheep everywhere and pubs where people know your name 🙂 Is that photo of Edinburgh taken from the Scott monument?
AmyMacWorld says
Isn’t it so fun? And I love that country! Also, good eye, that’s exactly where I took that photo 🙂 it’s a great view !!

I don’t think that’s ever a question I’ve really considered when traveling–though I’ve definitely thought of places before “I’m happy to visit here, but I don’t think I’d ever want to live here”
AmyMacWorld says
True! There are a lot of places I think “nope, I don’t imagine myself living here.” I still try to put myself in a native’s shoes, though, just for fun 🙂
Hsiao-Ting says
lol that’s such a fun game. i do that too when i’m traveling abroad. i like to leave a couple of days unplanned and pretend to live there like a “local” — checking out local coffee shops, grocery stores, etc. Love your pictures! Scotland and Prague sounds amazing!
AmyMacWorld says
That’s such a great idea! I am such a planner, but the best days when traveling are the days where you live like a local!! Thanks for stopping by 🙂
Marianne says
This is such a fun game to play! I’m glad you introduced this to me.. now wherever I go I’ll be thinking “what if I lived here..”
AmyMacWorld says
Haha if you do end up playing it, keep me posted 🙂

Something I wonder these things as well! Although I think as travelers it is easy to imagine how great it would be to live in some of these places compared to how it might actually be. One time I was in Paris talking to some locals working in a pastry shop and they were jealous we lived in the SF Bay area, we were jealous they lived in Paris. Grass is always greener….
AmyMacWorld says
Oh yes I DEFINITELY romanticize these other places. The grass is definitely always greener! It’s still fun to imagine, though 🙂

You know what, I’m also dreaming about having my own vineyard.. that would be like heaven every day.
I love your shots, especially of the sunset and the barrels. 🙂
AmyMacWorld says
Thank you so much! Isn’t Napa gorgeous? It would be like heaven every day, I love that description 🙂
