I’ve been taking selfies before “selfie” was a word (does this date me?), sometimes out of vanity, but usually out of what I perceive as necessity.
When you’re traveling alone or with just one other person, you’ll learn that sometimes, you want to throw yourself in front of whatever you’re taking a picture of, be it a building, a canal, a mountain or the ocean. Maybe you want to prove that you were there, maybe you just want a picture of yourself with this amazing vista, maybe your mother is asking for more pictures of your face.
Either way, the travel selfie is a thing all travelers understand. I’ve learned there are many kinds of travel selfies. As you’ll see below, many of these types of travel selfies are more successful than others. I’ll let you be the judge of the hits-and-misses yourself.
(P.S. Why “selfie” may be mostly a word, my spellcheck certainly doesn’t seem to think so…)
(Note: most of these pictures are unflattering. You’ve been warned!)
1. The Straw In Your Mouth Selfie: cheeky, no?
2. The Pensive Look with Sunglasses in Mouth Selfie.
3. The Shadow Selfie: cute until you realize you look chubby in your shadow.
4. The Kissing Selfie: just try to get anything but your chins.
5. The Rock I’m Standing On is Crumbling Beneath Me Selfie: commence fear.
6. The Riding On a Boat Selfie.
7. The Sweaty Jungle Selfie.
8. The Set the Camera Timer and Run Hug a Wall Selfie.
9. The Miley Cyrus with a Statue Selfie.
10. The Extreme Joy Selfie: just can’t contain yourself.

Love the straw in the mouth selfie. But I think my favourite is the toes in the sand/water selfie (if that even counts as a selfie?!).

Oh the toe selfie definitely counts ! I have many many “feet” selfies…on the beach, on the cobblestones, in different shoes, etc. 🙂 Another fun way to PROVE you were there, even if it’s just your feet!

I’m so familiar with the necessity of the travel selfie!! With just me and fiancé travelling, we often get shy asking other tourists/locals to take our picture so we are always attempting the selfie! Otherwise we end up having no pictures together! I love the shadow selfie! I always hate how they turn out for me though haha – why is my shadow so bulky looking? Haha great post!
AmyMacWorld says
Haha I always have the same reaction to shadow selfies–right after we took the image above, I was like “why do I look so…wide??” I think in this case, it was the wind blowing my shirt bigger…that’s the story I’m sticking too at least ;). I definitely understand being too shy to ask…or if they don’t speak English and you don’t know HOW to ask!! But you still want photos together, so you gotta do what you gotta do, right?? Thank you so much for reading 🙂
